Fall Finale
Decorate with Things You Already Own
Fall is just a bit past its peak here in Kentucky. Rumpled carpets of color spread under trees like left-behind picnic blankets. Jackets and even gloves are necessities these days, and I’m letting myself think about the holidays. I’d love to know how the seasons are changing where you live.
Last week, temps dipped into the 20s and froze my beloved Heavenly Blue vine, but not before I brought in lengths of buds and blooms. These might last until almost Christmas—amazing. If your garden is still UNfrozen, collect cuttings to enjoy in your fall home-scape. Some of them may even root and continue with you through winter, ready to take off again in the spring.
In a small homeplace like ours, personalized vignettes boost the cozy factor and speak “welcome” without a word. This wall in our dining room features objects collected here and there—an antique frame, wooden shoe pegs, a lead glass lantern, and a hydrangea wreath made from backyard garden blooms. Find a spot where you can tuck away a pile of loved items. When you’re ready to update one of your rooms, go “shopping” in your own stash. Learn more about creating vignettes here.
